Restoring the Natural Meadows of the Amata Valley
At Kārļamuiža, we have taken an important step towards preserving the natural meadows of the Amata Valley for the future. With the support of the Latvian Environmental Protection Fund, we can now continue the restoration and careful management of these biologically valuable habitats on a broader scale.
Natural meadows are among Latvia’s richest habitats, yet today only a small part of them remains. At Kārļamuiža, they have shaped the landscape of the Amata Valley for many decades. Some of our oldest woodland meadows have existed for at least 80 years. Their long and careful management has allowed a remarkable diversity of plants to survive.
More than 20 indicator species of natural grasslands have been recorded in the meadows of Kārļamuiža. Among their botanical treasures are also wild orchids, including butterfly orchids and marsh orchids. Their presence tells the story of a landscape that has remained relatively undisturbed and has been tended with care over many years.
As part of the project, more than 4 hectares of natural grassland will be restored and carefully managed. Overgrown areas will be opened up, the meadows will be maintained, and the conditions needed for characteristic meadow plants and their communities to thrive will be preserved.
But our aim is not only to protect these meadows. We also want to make them easier to discover and understand.
New information boards and a small educational point will be created in Kārļamuiža Woodland Park and the Amata Valley, offering hotel guests and hikers along the Amata trails an opportunity to learn more about meadow plants, the relationships between them, and the importance of natural grasslands for Latvia’s biodiversity.
This landscape was not created all at once. It has evolved slowly over generations, shaped by nature and by careful human stewardship.
Our task is to help this story continue.
So that the meadows of the Amata Valley may continue to flower for generations to come.
Project No. I1-10-4/35/2026 “Restoration of Grassland Habitats in the Amata Valley near Kārļi” is implemented with the support of the Latvian Environmental Protection Fund.
